SPIN is blocking a website that should not be blocked - how do I report this?

Sometimes robots make mistakes with their algorithms.  Email us at support@nationaledtech.com and let us know the URL of the website by placing it in the subject line. If possible, mention the category that SPIN blocked the site under – our blocked message will provide this information.

SPIN is not blocking an inappropriate website - how do I report this?

Email us at support@nationaledtech.com and let us know the URL of the website by placing it in the subject line of an email. We’ll review and get back to you quickly!

Did you know? We created our custom category of “Prone to Porn” based on feedback from our users. This category blocks websites that are normally good but have open search and access to pornography.

Why can I search for Pornography by using other Browsers?

SPIN does not affect the search via other browsers such as the stock Internet on Android devices, Chrome, or Safari on iOS devices.

Lock in SPIN – make SPIN your default web browser

SPIN Safe Browser can be enhanced by Boomerang Parental & Screen Time Controls (designed for families with kids) or Manage SPIN Safe Browser (designed for self-regulating adults or those looking to just focus on a safe browsing experience with additional security and customization of SPIN.)

Why does SPIN block Reddit?

Reddit contains pornographic, nude and inappropriate content so it is blocked under our custom “Prone to Porn” Category.  To unblock it, you would uncheck the “Prone to Porn” category in the web management dashboard of Boomerang Parental Control.  Yet, there is a tradeoff.  Now, other sites, such as Twitter, Tumblr, Imgur will work too which also are “Prone to Porn.”  This category covers respectable sites that are normally good but contain searchable pornography and inappropriate content. We do have on the roadmap a feature: “Add Good URL” – this would override the Categories.  So in the future, you will be able to just allow a specific Reddit domain such as https://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/.

Why does SPIN block Blogspot?

Blogspot contains pornographic, nude and inappropriate content that is freely searchable so it is blocked under our custom “Prone to Porn” Category.  To unblock it, you would uncheck the “Prone to Porn” category in the web management dashboard of Boomerang Parental Control.  Yet, there is a tradeoff.  Now, other sites, such as Reddit, Tumblr, Imgur will work too which also are “Prone to Porn.”  This category covers respectable sites that are normally good but contain searchable pornography and inappropriate content.

Why is Google Images still showing racy images?

We enforce Google SafeSearch: This is the first level of filtering that we have which is operated by Google. Google does a decent job of removing pornography but still allows some racy images such as lingerie and bikinis. If you feel that these are inappropriate, file a report with Google: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/safesearch?pli=1. And also let us know by emailing us at support@nationaledtech.com.

Why does SPIN block access to YouTube?

SPIN blocks access to YouTube and other “Streaming Media” sites which allows us to have a 4+ rating on the App Store and rated as Everyone on Google Play. Parents love that we block these “Streaming Media” sites by default as it gives them the ability to manage YouTube viewing on Android devices by limiting screen time to the YouTube app with our Android version of Parental Board and Boomerang Parental Control. We also now allow Parents to review their child’s Android YouTube app viewing history via our web dashboard

What does SPIN Safe Browser filter?

SPIN  filters millions of sites in categories that contain inappropriate content such as pornography, nudity, unfiltered search engines, and others based around addiction such as drugs and alcohol. SPIN also enforces Safe Search in Bing, Google and Yahoo’s search engines. This means searches for content in these search engines will return more appropriate results for websites and images.

Optionally, you can customize over 30 additional categories and block specific websites by using popular parental control products such as Boomerang Parental Control or Parental Board

I am an Adult; How do I use SPIN to just block Pornography?

Check out our companion app, Manage SPIN (Android only). Manage SPIN is a powerful self-regulation tool in the fight against internet pornography. Manage SPIN is a companion app to the popular SPIN Safe Browser.

Why is SPIN Free?

At National EdTech, we are parents that are passionate about kids, education and technology. We are in the parental control business and empower parents to manage the digital life that we all live in. Part of our responsibility as parents is to provide a safe surfing environment for our children so we thought SPIN would be a big part of our value proposition that we can offer absolutely free to other parents. We hope that you love SPIN and it leads you to discovering what Boomerang Parental Control can also do.

How do I know if a website was blocked?

SPIN will inform the user when a site was found to not be appropriate as per our filtering categories. The message will look like this:
SPIN blocked website message

If Parental Board or Boomerang Parental Control are being used along with SPIN, then blocked sites will be reported in the web management dashboard under “Blocked Sites” in the Browsing Tab and via our daily emailed reports.

Does SPIN have a Private Browsing or Incognito Mode?

There is no incognito mode in SPIN Safe Browser.

How do I monitor my child’s browsing history?

Monitoring the browsing history requires Parental Board or Boomerang Parental Control. SPIN will then send the browsing history over to these parental control products. Parents can then review “Blocked Websites” and “Visited Websites” in the web management dashboard under the Browsing Tab. Additionally in the Browsing Tab, parents can:

      • Edit active Content categories
      • Block specific websites
      • Plus many powerful parental controls!

Note: Parental Board and Boomerang Parental Control will gather the browsing history even if SPIN’s browsing history is cleared.

How can I make SPIN be the only browser to access the Internet?

Lock in SPIN for Free

For Android

Manually remove all other web browsers and then set a PIN code for the Google Play Store. This way, your child will not be able to download anything from the Google Play Store without your PIN code.

For iOS

Enable the built-in restrictions that iOS provides to block Safari. The drawback is any other browsers can be added unless you block the App Store too.

Lock in SPIN with parental controls

Required Parental Board or Boomerang Parental Control.

Lock in SPIN on Android Devices:

During install, the onboarding wizard of Parental Board & Boomerang have a “Block Browsers” setting which will prohibit all browsers and leave SPIN as the only functioning browser. We will also block any other browser from being installed from the Google Play Store. So using Parental Board or Boomerang is ideal if you want to allow access to the Google Play Store and lock in SPIN as the only functioning browser.

Lock in SPIN on iOS Devices:

After installation of Parental Board or Boomerang is complete, then log into the web management dashboard (or the Parental Board or Boomerang App on your device if you installed it in parent mode to Manage Family Devices) and prohibit Safari as well as set the age restriction to 12+ or less as most other popular modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Opera are all rated as 17+. SPIN is rated 4+ so it will still work.

Can I manage the filters and sites that SPIN allows or blocks?

Yes, parents that want to do so can use Boomerang Parental Control which allow for the following:

      • Review Web history
      • Edit active Content categories
      • Allow or block specific websites

Parents would also get the additional value of:

      • Preventing Children from Mobile Device Addiction
      • Set Time Limits
      • Control Apps & Content
      • Get Child’s Location
      • Even setup a Geofence
      • Smartphone Features for Calling & Texting
      • Daily Reporting on Device Usage

Why can’t I share a news article on Twitter using SPIN?
